  2. OVERCOMING THE DRAGON

  6.  In the last year there has been renewed interested in 
  7. dinosaurs, largely because of the movie Jurrasic Park.  If 
  8. you've seen the movie, you'll recall that several 
  9. dinosaurs are cloned and then proceed to reek havoc on 
  10. those humans unlucky to get too near.  Some of the most
  11. frightening moments occur as the humans try to protect 
  12. themselves and overcome the terror of the T-Rex and three 
  13. ferocious velociraptors!  While Michael Crichton and 
  14. Steven Spielberg have brought an entertaining story to the 
  15. big screen, it is interesting to note that nearly 2000 
  16. years ago John spoke of a similar situation.  Only, it 
  17. wasn't a dinosaur he wrote about, but a Dragon!
  18.  
  19.  Revelation 12:3  vividly describes a red Dragon with 
  20. seven heads, ten horns, and seven diadems (more hideous 
  21. and frightening than even a T-Rex!)  This Dragon, 
  22. identified as the Devil and Satan (v.9) wages war in 
  23. heaven with Michael and his angels until he is finally 
  24. "thrown down" to earth where he begins to "accuse" the 
  25. brethren "day and night" (v. 10).

  27.  Now, there is much about the book of Revelation that I do 
  28. not know.  I'm not an advocate of an early or late date 
  29. (though I do recall from my college days having several of 
  30. each!)  So, while there are many things I cannot affirm 
  31. about the symbology of Revelation 12, the message of verse 
  32. 11 is clear and unmistakable: Christians overcame the
  33. Dragon because of:
  34.  
  35. STEP 1: THE BLOOD OF THE LAMB 
  36.  
  37. Blood is an important substance in our society.  We 
  38. frequently hear pleas for blood donations and despite 
  39. man's ingenuity, he has not been able to replicate the 
  40. life-giving qualities of blood.  The Jews were also 
  41. familiar with the power of blood and the sacrifices for 
  42. consecration (Ex 29:10-14).  But, in verse 11, we are not 
  43. talking about the blood of bullocks, but of Christ 
  44. himself!  And the message is clear: overcoming the Dragon 
  45. depends on the blood of the Lamb!

  48. Note Peter's assertion of that very fact in 1 Pet. 
  49. 1:18-19: "Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed 
  50. with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your 
  51. vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 
  52. But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb 
  53. without blemish and without spot."
  54.  
  55. STEP 2: THE WORD OF THEIR TESTIMONY
  56.  
  57.  The second step in overcoming the dragon seems a bit 
  58. puzzling.  Of whose testimony is John speaking? We get 
  59. some insight from the word itself when we consider that 
  60. "testimony" is second cousin to the words "testify" and 
  61. "test."  Witnesses are called to testify in court.  They 
  62. provide testimony.  Similarly, all of us have taken tests, 
  63. which are designed to determine whether we pass or fail.  
  64. But, the Greek word itself provides even greater insight.  
  65. The word "testimony" comes from the Greek "marturia" from 
  66. whence we get the word "martyr."  
  67.  
  68.  John is telling us that we can overcome the Dragon by 
  69. heeding the testimony of the faithful.  Note Rev 6:9 and 
  70. 12:17 as it relates to the testimony of "our fathers."  
  71. John's message echoes the idea expressed in Heb 12:1-2:
  72. "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so 
  73. great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, 
  74. and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run 
  75. with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto 
  76. Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the 
  77. joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising 
  78. the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne 
  79. of God."

  81. STEP 3: DID NOT LOVE LIFE, EVEN TO DEATH
  82.  
  83. God has programmed us for survival.  Yet John indicates 
  84. that one of the ways to overcome the Dragon is to 
  85. willingly put aside our "survival instinct."  We must be 
  86. willing to die for God's cause! Need proof?  Examples 
  87. exist everywhere: Daniel and his three friends "did not 
  88. love life, even to death."  They were willing to put aside 
  89. the "survival instinct" for a higher calling.  Peter died 
  90.

  92. in service to Christ because "he did not love life, even 
  93. to death." He loved Someone else more than life itself!  
  94. The same idea is expressed by Jesus himself in Mark 8:35 -
  95. "...whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the
  96. gospel's, the same shall save it."
  97.  
  98.  Satan still is at work and we are still in danger.  How
  99. do we overcome the evil one? The same way John instructed
  100. the seven churches of Asia: "they overcame him by the
  101. blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and
  102. they loved not their lives unto the death." Rev 12:11.
